The Golden Era: West by Rail with the Harvey Girls By Lesley Poling-Kempes Illustrated by Lynette C. Ross
Book Two in a three-part paper doll history of Harvey Girl costume and custom, The Golden Era portrays the Fred Harvey Company dynasty at its peak.
The settings of this volume culminate at the splendorous El Tovar of the Grand Canyon in the mid-1920s. The story introduces characters Marianne Brown, a Harvey Girl from Waynoka, Oklahoma; Johanna Becker, an Indian Detours Guide; Christopher Schurig, a Harvey chef; and James Reid, an Indian Detours driver, through Marianne's journal from 1922 to 1927. The full-color costumes and Marianne's chronicle offer an authentic recreation of the Harvey Southwest during the company's most glamorous and legendary years.
As in Book One, uniforms and other costumes are illustrated from the holdings of the Arizona State Capitol Museum and historic photographs.
